Mac System Information

History and other comments

I bought this MacBook Pro just after the June '07 updated MBP models came out. There were three main reasons for buying at that time:
  1. Apple finally adjusted their EUR price more closer to the USD price. At the time of my purchase it was 1899 EUR and 1999 USD. The previous model sold for 1999 EUR or 1999 USD, while the currency rate was ~1.33  USD per EUR.
  2. The new update provided some new technology I had been waiting for (LED illuminated display, better general specs)
  3. I was able to trade in some older PC hardware I didn't need, so I got a pretty good total price.
There were some other reasons, too, of course.

My first impression of the MBP was that the screen felt wider in real life than on the pictures on of the same computer on the web. The screen is great with LED backlight and glossy screen surface. It is, however, not any brighter than other contemporary laptops I've seen. It's of course much brighter than my old iBook 12", but comparing with some HP and IBM laptops (from the same time frame) I've seen it's maybe as bright, but not brighter. The backlight is very even on the whole screen but tend to look yellowish if you look on white surfaces from the side.

Update in December 2007: Since the prices for SO-DIMMs had gone down pretty much, and I could use some more memory in the MBP I upgraded to the full 4 GB, using 2 pcs. of Buffalo DDR2 667MHz 2 GB SO-DIMMs. Luckily it's a very simple procedure to change RAM in the MBP, you just have to pop out the battery and loosen three screws.
