COMMENTS IBM AIX must be one of the worst looking *NIX systems ever made (that is, if you are used to DEC standard...). This machine, a 1st generation PowerPC, can't handle the workload of AIX 4.3 with CDE at any acceptable speed. With AIX 4.1.3 it's much better, you can even use it.
ESTIMATED PRICE '93 $20,000

History and other comments

I got my two RS/6000 computers in September 2003. This system is a bit too slow for any real desktop usage, at least with AIX 4.3, and AFAIK the 7011/25E is not compatible with any Linux/*BSD distribution either. Please do let me know, if I'm mistaking.

This system has the first implementation of PowerPC, the 601. It really shows that it's a budget version of Big Blue's POWER architecture. My other RS/6000 system, the 7012/34H, feels much, much faster eventhough it scores lower on some benchmarks.

Later in 2004  I was able to get  AIX 4.1.3 for this box. It's a more simplistic version of AIX but because of this, the speed is much better. I recommend trying an older version of AIX, either 4.1 or 4.2 if you feel your box is too slow for 4.3 or newer.
